IIn Expedition, Andrey Novikov transforms a flooded architectural interior into a dreamlike landscape of childhood exploration and symbolic adventure. Two children navigate the shallow reflective water with improvised seriousness, surrounded by fragments of abandoned domestic space and a small handcrafted vessel resembling a fragile expeditionary machine. The painting balances innocence with subtle emotional unease. Monumental walls, flooded floors, and theatrical light create an atmosphere suspended between memory, imagination, and post-catastrophic silence. The children appear absorbed within their own private world, turning the ruined environment into a temporary territory of discovery and survival. Executed in oil on linen, the work combines expressive painterly gestures with cinematic colour and luminous atmospheric layering. Deep violets, radiant oranges, and cool architectural tones create the visual tension characteristic of Novikov’s Inside project, while reflective surfaces and fragmented spatial planes produce a sensation closer to memory than direct observation. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative, the painting operates through emotional resonance and symbolic space, inviting contemplation on childhood perception, resilience, and the human ability to transform uncertainty into play. Part of the Inside project, Expedition continues Novikov’s exploration of psychological interiors, emotional architecture, and fragile human presence within unstable contemporary environments. A museum-scale contemporary figurative painting intended for collectors of atmospheric, cinematic, and intellectually driven contemporary art. Collector Information
